How to Write a Book When You’re Busy

I used to work a 9-5, but that didn’t stop me from writing two books.

And it shouldn’t stop you either.

But how exactly do you write when you don’t have the time to write

Come, let me show you how.

1. Wake up early

Both my first and my second books were written while I was working a 9–5.

How did I do this?

I reserved my early mornings for writing.

Sometimes, I would wake up as early as 4am to get some writing done.

Although it wasn’t easy at first, I came to enjoy this since it is usually quiet at that time of the day, allowing me to fully focus on writing.

2. Have a scheduled writing time

Before I found an even more effective method (waking up early), this was what I did.

I would set a timer for a particular period during the day (30 minutes to 1 hour) to focus on writing my book.

I stopped using this method because it started getting in the way of my work. Twenty minutes in, and my boss would call to ask me to do some edits or work on some projects.

But if you can set a dedicated time of the day to write and stick to it, then by all means, use this method, and before you know it, your completed book will be staring you in the face.

3. Cut down on Time Suckers

Time suckers are activities that seem like fun but, in reality, only suck away your time.

I’m talking about things like playing video games, watching movies, and scrolling through social media.

These activities make one hour seem like ten minutes because it is very easy to get carried away while engaging in them.

They are also part of the reasons why you never have any time left for yourself.

Because there’s no way to have any time left for yourself if you spend three hours scrolling through TikTok. Is there?

So reduce these activities, and you will see that you have more than enough time to write that book. One of the methods I use to reduce my screen time, and which has been very effective for me, is to turn on the “Focus Mode” on my phone.

The “Focus mode” pauses apps after you’ve used them for five minutes.

I also make use of an app timer that pauses an app for the rest of the day after a particular duration.

4. Make your book your priority

If you don’t see writing your book as a priority, you won’t write it even when you have the time.

You must see your book as something you MUST write.

When I was writing my book, I told myself: It’s either you write it or you write it. It’s compulsory, not obligatory.

And with this mindset, I woke up every morning to write my book because I knew that if I don’t write it, ten years from now, I will regret it. This helped me to make my book my utmost priority.

So ask yourself, if I don’t write this book, what do I stand to lose? How would it make me feel?

5. Hire a ghostwriter

Now here comes the harsh reality: Even with all these tips, you may still be unable to write that book because, well, life has a way of getting in the way of our plans.

So instead of waiting around for when life will no longer get in the way, why don’t you let a ghostwriter help you out in a faster, better, and more efficient way?

By hiring a ghostwriter to help you in the writing of your book, you save yourself the time and energy required to write a book.

Even better, you get a well-written, well-researched, and well-edited book in half the time it would have taken you to write it yourself.
